It's no secret that Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) and Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOC) are expensive. They are encased in metal and the filters themselves are made from rare Earth materials. Due to how difficult it can be to get these materials and the process it takes to make a single unit, we are buying used DPFs and DOCs for recycling purposes.
It would be a waste to let these parts rust away in a scrap yard and not have the materials retracted from them for re-purposing. These materials are coated in Platinum Group Metals (PGM) and require care when recycling. Sure, you could give them to the local scrap guy for a couple bucks; however, the local scrap guy only cares about the metal casing and not the core, which is the important bit for recycling. Not only would you be wasting material, but you could be earning far more money when selling them for proper recycling. Recycling is great; it is greater when you can get something out of it as well.
